Dyskolos (Greek: Δύσκολος, pronounced, translated as The Grouch, The Misanthrope, Dyscolos book Curmudgeon, The Bad-tempered Man or Old Cantankerous) is an Ancient Greek comedy by Menander, the only one of his plays, and of the whole New Comedy, that has survived in (almost) complete form.

Life. Little is known of Apollonius Dyscolus, other than that he was born at Alexandria, son of precise dates for his life are not known. His son Aelius Herodianus, who wrote on phonology, appears to have moved to Rome at the time of Marcus Dyscolos book it is inferred that his father must have been a contemporary of Hadrian, and may have spent a short period Born: 2nd century, Alexandria.

The Dyskolos, or The Bad-Tempered Man, is the most complete work we have by a founding master (perhaps THE founding master), of comedy.I found this play to be incredibly readable.

The basic plot is that a man, Sostratos, who falls in love with a farmers daughter. Knemon is the bad-tempered man in the play, and refuses Sostratoss intentions/5(26). Get print book. No eBook available.
