Inside w pages containing the acts of the inquiry of Servant of God Mother Mary Teresa Tallon, P.V.M.I., foundress of the Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate, an order of contemplative-missionaries, which was officially closed in the archdiocese last week and sent to Rome for the next step toward beatification and canonization.   As a help in this effort, Our Sunday Visitor has published the small book, A Pastoral Guide to Opening Your Parish. It’s meant as a practical resource for pastoral teams to facilitate parish.

Other Parish Visitor convents are in Phoenix, Ariz., and in the Philippines and Nigeria, where two are located. The congregation has some 60 sisters. “Mother taught us we are to be contemplative through the streets,” said Maria Catherine, who noted that people often think of contemplative sisters as cloistered. They organize prayer vigils, pilgrimages, and congressional visits involving their parish communities. Additionally, pastoral agents take leadership roles in the local rollout of new immigration policies such as the Temporary Visitor Driver’s Licenses and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

On Mission Sunday we recall that Vatican II said the Church is missionary by her very nature (Ad gentes, 2).This statement was an important exercise in self-understanding for the Church at the time. In imitation of the Sacred Heart of the Good Shepherd, Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate combine a contemplative prayer life with missionary visitation to parish families, and religious instruction. Parish Visitor Sisters visit families and individuals where they live, door to door as well as along the way, in order to win souls for Christ.

Implementing these four keys over time, parishes can become not simply gathering places for worship but seedbeds of discipleship and missionary outposts of the New Evangelization. This book is a must-read for Catholic clergy, lay parish staff, anyone working in ministry, and any dedicated parishioner who is passionate about renewing the Church.5/5(7).
